This graceful Victorian house was built by F.M. Phillips, and three years later remodeled with a second story added by contractor, M.W. Schwall. A ship builder from Germany, Schwall fell in love with a Sandersville girl, and his family became prominent builders. G-g-g-grandson, Grayson Upton, says Schwall used ship-building techniques to remodel the Smith house. The balustrades of the main floor and second story porches show fine millwork. Attorney Thomas Albea’s family and later the Boatwright family each lived in the house for decades. In 2004 Mayor Pro Tem Jeffrey Smith and his wife Kelli acquired the home and have maintained it beautifully.
