Wilcher-Etheridge House

Built in Glascock County by Jeremiah Wilcher, this unique house was moved in three pieces to Washington County by Roy and Hilda Etheridge in 1979. Stones and bricks of five chimneys were recovered and replaced. Original hand-planed walls and wainscoting are exposed. Furnishings yield endless stories, including a courting bench made by Hilda’s g-g-g-grandfather for his daughter before he died at Fredericksburg. In 1993 the Georgia Trust awarded a Citation of Excellence to the Etheridges for their authentic restoration. Roy says, “Hilda went to Sandersville School, and I know she would have wanted her house shown to help it.”
