Included in Images of America: Washington County are vintage photographs depicting the community in earlier days. Members of the Washington County Historical Society have compiled this unique collection as a tribute to the residents of the area, including two Georgia governors: Jared Irwin and Thomas Hardwick. Other notable past residents include Louis Cohen, who started the first Sandersville Railroad, a bank, and mercantile stores; Ben Tarbutton, Sr., who welcomed the kaolin industry in the mid-20th century; Elijah Poole Mohammed, leader of the Nation of Islam, who was born near Deepstep; and the Gordy family of Motown music fame. Both famous and everyday men and women are celebrated within these pages, in a retrospective that is sure to delight longtime county residents as well as new ones.
The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today.
