Members of the Washington County Historical Society have compiled this unique collection as a tribute to the residents of the area, including two Georgia governors: Jared Irwin and Thomas Hardwick. Other notable past residents include Louis Cohen, who started the first Sandersville Railroad, a bank, and mercantile stores; Ben Tarbutton, Sr., who welcomed the kaolin industry in the mid-20th century; Elijah Poole Mohammed, leader of the Nation of Islam, who was born near Deepstep; and the Gordy family of Motown music fame. Both famous and everyday men and women are celebrated within these pages, in a retrospective that is sure to delight longtime county residents as well as new ones.
